To celebrate the love in our community, we have a little promotion called The Jewelry Center’s Couple of the Month! Each month we award one lucky couple with a date-night on the town and a piece about them on our blog! Our June 2019 Couple of the Month is married couple Terry and Tami! Here’s a look at our interview with this wonderful couple.
HOW DID YOU MEET? FIRST DATE?
Terry: We actually met in elementary school in Ramstein, Germany!
Tami: My dad was stationed in the Army, his dad was stationed in the Airforce. And I was dating his best friend at the time!
Terry: Then our first official date was a football dance that we went together to.
Terry: After her dad passed away, Tami and her family moved here to Wisconsin. Then my father got stationed in Virginia, so we were able to keep in touch for about 4 years. I eventually went to college in Chicago and we were able to start dating again.
HOW DID YOU PROPOSE, TERRY?
Terry: I took her out to the airport to watch the planes fly in – she knew it was coming though. Her mom kind of ‘forced her way’ into helping me pick out the ring. So everyone knew it was coming. If I did it again I probably would have tried to keep it a bit more of a surprise.
Tami – We just spent the night watching planes land at Mitchell, and he proposed there!
AND HOW WAS THE WEDDING?
Tami – Well it was a great party that’s for sure!
Terry – We didn’t have a lot of people because my family was all over the place, and hers is pretty small. But we still had a lot of fun.
Tami – His dad bought everyone liquor, everyone got their fill, nobody got unruly. It was a great time.
Terry – Then we left the next day to go to Cancun.
ANY MEMORIES FROM THE DAY?
Terry – I remember our flower girl decided to run off and chase a skunk while we were taking pictures. Luckily the skunk didn’t retaliate, she was far enough away to avoid disaster.
Tami – Also, as my miniature bride was walking down the aisle, you could start to see her eyes get as big as saucers. Halfway down she must have thought “I’m not doing this” and took off the other way.
YOU JUST CELEBRATED AN ANNIVERSARY, RIGHT?
Tami – Yes! It was our 28th wedding anniversary.
Terry – We went on a cruise which was a lot of fun. We went to Cozumel, Key West, and were supposed to go to Cuba too but there was that order that sanctioned the area from US citizens. So they gave us an extra day in Conzumel instead.
Tami – It was the first cruise for both of us, it was great. I’d recommend it, especially if you like to eat. Food, food, food!
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU ARE PROUD OF AS A MARRIED COUPLE?
Terry – Well we’re definitely proud we are still together! In my family, there have been a few divorces. After 28 years, that’s a long time. So we’re definitely proud of that.
Tami – We also have two wonderful children! Both are living at home and finishing up college right now. So we’ll get them out of the house soon.
ANY ADVICE TO OFFER TO NEWLYWEDS?
Terry – Argue, but make sure you talk the next day.
Tami – When you argue you are heated, but just give yourselves a little time to cool down, think about the situation, and then talk about it.
Terry – The other thing would be to realize that your life will change. You start as newlyweds, maybe you don’t have much money. You’re probably infatuated with each other. By the time you get 10-15 years, that infatuation kinda loses its way and it truly becomes love. And you have to realize there are stages in your life together.
Tami – Right, it’s not going to be your honeymoon everyday. We went through 20 years of being parents, not doing the little stuff as much. And now that our kids are grown up, we can start doing those little things again.
WONDERFUL ANSWER! ANY HOBBIES YOU TWO ENJOY DOING TOGETHER NOW THAT YOU HAVE MORE FREE TIME?
Tami – We do lots of stuff together. We love Summerfest, we like the same music, we go apple picking.
Terry – We just really enjoy doing the little things!
GREAT! ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD?
Terry – We just want to thank you for doing the contest and picking us. This has been a lot of fun.
Tami – Yes thanks so much! We’re looking forward to our date night!
